Summary

This volume features a selection of conference papers from the International Symposium Hieronymus noster, which took place in Ljubljana (October 2019), was organised by many international institutions under the honorary patronage of the president of the Republic of Slovenia, and has celebrated the occasion of the 1600^th anniversary of Jerome’s death.

The conference gathered many of the most renowned Jerome scholars from all over the world (over 120 participants) for the biggest Jerome conference up until now. A carefully made selection of the papers presents a broad perspective of contemporary research in Hieronymian studies, centered around four major topics (hermeneutics, history, exegesis, theology). The papers offer various new insights in the work of Jerome, since they explore some completely new topics that put the Stridonian’s work into new perspective (e.g. the discovery of Comm. in ev. of Fortunatianus of Aquileia, recent archeological discoveries in Emona, new insights in his exegesis and hermeneutics, etc.).

The volume’s title, Hieronymus noster, is a quotation from the early-sixth-century chronicler Marcellinus Comes, and at the same time a paraphrase of Jerome’s own epithet for his compatriot Victorinus of Pettau (Victorinus noster); instead of implying a narrow geographical character, it encompasses our common, universal heritage of Jerome’s work.
