Crusading Encounters and Commemoration through the Ages

This collection of selected papers from ‘Crusading Encounters’, the 2022 SSCLE Conference held at Royal Holloway (London) traces various forms of encounters facilitated by crusading, from western Latin Christian reactions to the cultures, religions, and holy places and objects they encountered in the East, to later Christian encounters with the Ottoman Empire, to encounters with and commemoration of the crusading past in later periods. It is important for resituating the study of the crusades within larger frameworks of intercultural and historical interaction: rather particular crusade expeditions being considered as isolated events, encounters with crusading are recontextualized within larger frameworks such as memory studies, material studies, race studies, legal history, the history of multiple forms of Christianity, diplomacy, and intercultural relations.
