Lectio: Studies in the Transmission of Texts & Ideas
Like living beings, texts and ideas evolve and change, some die out, others stay alive, but take a different shape. The purpose of this series is to explore the mechanisms of evolution and survival of texts and ideas from Antiquity to the Renaissance, that is, in a period in which texts were more fragile and ideas paradoxically freer (despite all kinds of censorship and social control) than in a time of increasing mass production. The unique character of this series consists in keeping together two aspects of scholarship which are too often, and wrongly so, kept separated: history of texts, textual criticism and scholarly editing on the one hand, and intellectual, cultural and artistic history on the other. As such, this series will certainly open up new perspectives for research in the long term.
Studium Lovaniense: Learning across Borders – Lectio subseries
Premodern universities created unique hybrid worlds of oral teaching, handwritten note-taking, and printed textbook production, and Louvain was no exception to this rule. Situated at the heart of Europe, the University of Louvain quickly became a pivotal center for the reception and dissemination of both ancient, medieval and renaissance knowledge across the continent, and later, the Habsburg world. Studium Lovaniense is a Lectio subseries bringing together recent research about the history of the studium generale in Louvain in its first four centuries, from its foundation by papal bull in 1425 to its suppression by the French regime in 1797, as well as the Collegium S.J. Lovaniense from its start in 1542 to its dissolution in 1773.
The series particularly welcomes monographs, dissertations and conference volumes devoted to scholars and students which sojourned or stayed in medieval or early modern Louvain, with a focus on the historical development of their ideas and teachings in this prime university town of the Low Countries. Also contributions to the rich collaborations between the academic world as printers and publishers are encouraged.
