The focus in this volume is the Second Vatican council’s interrelated teaching on revelation, the church, ecumenism, and education.
Peter De Mey is professor of ecclesiology and ecumenism at the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies, KU Leuven. He has been co-founder of the Vatican II Studies group of AAR. His research deals with pre-Vatican II ecumenism, redaction history and interpretation of Lumen Gentium, Unitatis Redintegratio and Orientalium Ecclesiarum, and contemporary issues in ecclesiology and ecumenism. He is moderating the intercontinental commentaries on Unitatis Redintegratio and Orientalium Ecclesiarum for the Vatican II: Event and Mandate project.
Antonia Pizzey is Senior Theology Lecturer at the Faculty of Theology and Philosophy, Australian Catholic University and National Deputy Head of the School of Theology. She is also Postdoctoral Researcher at the Research Centre for Studies of the Second Vatican Council (ACU). Her first book, Receptive Ecumenism and the Renewal of the Ecumenical Movement, was published by Brill in 2019. She is currently working on a monography around the history, meaning, and reception of Vatican II’s notion of the church as pilgrim.
Ormond Rush is a priest of the Catholic Diocese of Townsville, Australia, with a doctorate in theology from the Gregorian University, Rome. He is Associate Professor and Reader at Australian Catholic University, Brisbane Campus. He is a member of the Research Center for Studies of the Second Vatican Council (ACU). His most important study on Vatican II is: The Vision of Vatican II: Its Fundamental Principles (2019). He is co-editor of Vatican II in North America, Australia, and the Pacific (Vatican II: Event and Mandate, 5) (2026).
Sixty years after the close of the Second Vatican Council, its vision continues to shape—and to be shaped by—the global Catholic Church. This volume, the second in the Vatican II After Sixty Years series, returns to the conciliar debates and drafting processes through which that vision was forged, and asks how the Council’s foundational dynamic of aggiornamento might still illuminate the questions of our own time.
The volume gathers leading scholars from Europe, North and South America, the Middle East, and Asia. Massimo Faggioli opens with a wide-ranging call for an aggiornamento of the historiography of Vatican II itself. Subsequent chapters by Karim Schelkens and Riccardo Burigana shed fresh light on the debates surrounding Dei Verbum; Gilles Routhier, Rodrigo Polanco, and Rolando Iberico Ruiz uncover the distinctive Canadian, Latin American, and Peruvian contributions to Lumen Gentium; Jose Maripurath Devassy, Archbishop Michel Jalakh, and Catherine E. Clifford reassess the Council's engagement with the Eastern Catholic Churches and ecumenism; and Mathijs Lamberigts and Isaak Deman trace the intricate genesis of Gravissimum Educationis.
Together, these essays integrate the “spirit” behind the “letter” of Vatican II, opening new horizons for its ongoing reception throughout a global Roman Catholic Church.
