This book opens the new field of the study of Evagrius among the Christian communities of the Armenian and Syriac Churches.

The book offers an overview of the reception of the thought of Evagrius Ponticus (345–399) among Syriac and Armenian Christians in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Even though he was condemned by the Constantinopolitan Church, Evagrius’ works continued to be widely read and revered in Syriac and Armenian translations. Indeed, more of his works survive in translation than in the original Greek. Within the monastic institutions of the Christian East, Evagrius was regarded as one of the foremost theorists of ascetic theology. This book is the first collected volume specifically focused on fostering a renewed understanding of the Evagrian legacy in Eastern Christianity. It incorporates both general and specialized studies, including an historiographical survey, introductions to the Armenian manuscript and textual traditions, a new edition of the Syriac version of the Tractatus ad Eulogium, and multiple analyses of Syrian and Armenian engagement with Evagrian theology. Taken as a whole, the book opens up new avenues for research into the Evagrian influence on the Syriac and Armenian Churches.
