The essays in this book consist of the papers presented at an international symposium titled Urartu and Beyond, which focuses on the cultural and political relations of the Urartian State, the first central structure of the Near Eastern Highlands.
Sarduri, son of Lutupri, great king, strong king, king of the world… king who subdues those insubordinate to him... The first central political entity of the Eastern Anatolian Plateau, the Urartian Kingdom, was proclaimed by King Sarduri with this inscription on the Madır Burç monument at Van Fortress. For over 250 years, the kingdom stood as the most powerful political and cultural force across a vast territory, and helped to shape the cultural heritage of territories in Türkiye, Iran, and the South Caucasus. Nonetheless, research into Urartu has long remained regional. This two-volume set offers a comprehensive evaluation of studies related to the Urartian Kingdom and its culture. Focusing both on the Urartian heartlands and beyond, and the territories into which the kingdom expanded, the chapters presented here break new ground in our understanding of the region.
