Dr. Sanne Maekelberg (KU Leuven) has a master’s degree in architectural engineering from KU Leuven (2014). Her master thesis focused on the digital reconstruction of the Prince’s Court in Bruges, one of the main residences of the dukes of Burgundy, which has resulted in a publication with Krista De Jonge in Architectural Histories (2018). In May 2019 she successfully defended her PhD project ‘The residential system of the high nobility in the Habsburg Low Countries: the Croÿ case’, in which she combines approaches from architectural history with an interest in digital visualization techniques. She was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Copenhagen’s Centre for Privacy Studies in association with the Royal Danish Academy (2020-2023), and has since then rejoined KU Leuven. She was also the project manager of the MSCA ITN PALAMUSTO.
Charles III of Croÿ, Duke of Aarschot, was one of the highest noblemen of the Low Countries and a foremost patron of the arts and architecture, a military commander and heir to the illustrious Croÿ dynasty. In 1595 he inherited a vast collection of domains and residences, for which he developed extensive and ambitious renovation plans. Using a wide range of sources specific to architectural history and history of the nobility, combined with tools from the digital humanities, this book presents for the first time an in-depth study of Charles of Croÿ’s patronage and architectural programme and how these were used to express status and pageantry to the contemporary observer.
