Summary
This volume contains a critical edition of two previously
unedited anonymous poems, the Liber prefigurationum Christi et
Ecclesie and the Liber de gratia Novi
Testamenti. Both works seem to have been
written in France during the reign of King Philip I (1060-1108).
The Liber prefigurationum is a compendium of biblical
typology. It versifies the most salient episodes of the Old
Testament, from Genesis to Maccabees, as prefiguring the
incarnation of Christ and the foundation of the Christian Church.
The Liber de gratia presents the life of Christ from the
point of view of its significance for all believers. Both poems are
meant to educate their readers and guide them on their journey
towards moral improvement and ultimate salvation.
