Summary
The present volume contains the first critical edition of one of the treatises written by Isidore of Seville: the one modernly known as Liber de differentiis II, the first chapter of which is Inter Deum et Dominum. The work is offered here in the form that it is supposed to have had at the beginning of the seventh century, this is to say, separate from the book known as Liber de differentiis I (the first entry of which is Inter caelum et aethera according to the edition prepared by C. Codoñer, Paris, 1992), and with which it seems not to have borne any immediate sequential relation in its origin, either in content or chronology.
For the new establishment of the text, the editor has examined more than one hundred manuscripts from the eigtht to the sixteenth century, of which she has retained thirty three in the critical apparatus, all of them prior to the eleventh century. The text is therefore divided not into the traditional forty entries (cfr PL 83, 69-98), but into forty one. The editor also points out several fragments and chapters that were added to the original writing (this edition provides the reader with an appendix concerning the numbering of the text in chapters).
The Latin text is preceded by an introduction divided into three sections (literary, linguistic and critical study). Since scholarly studies about this treatise were almost completely lacking, numerous aspects relative to its form, content and structure are clarified here.
Le présent volume contient la première édition critique du traité d'Isidore de Séville connu dès nos jours comme Liber de differentiis II, dont la première entrée est Inter Deum et Dominum. L'œuvre est présentée comme elle a dû circuler au début du VIIe siècle, c'est-à-dire, séparée du texte connu comme Liber de differentiis I, dont la première entrée est Inter caelum et aethera selon l'édition de C. Codoñer (ALMA, Paris, 1992), et avec lequel elle paraît n'avoir gardé dans son origine aucune relation de séquence immédiate, ni dans son contenu ni dans sa chronologie.
Pour le nouvel établissement du texte, l'éditrice a examiné plus de cent manuscrits du VIIIe au XVIe siècles, parmi lesquels elle a retenu dans l'apparat critique le témoignage de trente-trois, tous antérieurs au XIe siècle. On trouve ainsi une œuvre divisée en quarante et une entrées, non les quarante traditionnelles (cf. PL 83, 69-98), expurgée maintenant de plusieurs fragments et de chapitres postérieurs à la rédaction originale (l'édition offre un appendice sur la numérotation dans lequel on détaille cet aspect de l'histoire du texte).
Le texte latin est précédé par une vaste introduction divisée en trois parties (étude littéraire, linguistique et critique), dans laquelle l'éditrice clarifie de nombreux aspects relatifs au contenu et à la structure de cette œuvre, sur laquelle on manquait presque complètement d'études scientifiques.
Este libro es la primera edición crítica del tratado de Isidoro de Sevilla conocido modernamente como De differentiis II, cuya primera entrada es Inter Deum et Dominum. La obra se presenta tal y como debió de circular a comienzos del siglo VII, esto es, separada del conocido como libro I, cuya primera entrada es Inter caelum et aethera según la edición de C. Codoñer (ALMA, París, 1992), y con el que parece no haber guardado en su origen ninguna relación de secuencia inmediata, ni en su contenido ni en su cronología.
Para el nuevo establecimiento del texto, la editora ha examinado más de cien manuscritos de entre los siglos VIII y XVI, de los cuales ha retenido en el aparato crítico el testimonio de treinta y tres, todos ellos anteriores al siglo XI. Se recontruye así una obra dividida en cuarenta y una entradas, no en las tradicionales cuarenta (cfr PL 83, 69-98), expurgada ahora de varios fragmentos y capítulos posteriores a la redacción original (la edición cuenta con un apéndice sobre la numeración del texto en capítulos en la que se detalla este aspecto de su historia).
El texto latino está precedido por una amplia introducción dividida en tres apartados (estudio literario, lingüístico y crítico), en los que se aclaran numerosos aspectos relativos a la forma, contenido y estructura de esta obra, acerca de la cual se carecía casi completamente de estudios científicos.
