Self-archiving Policy (‘Green’ Open Access)

Self-archiving means that as an author, you can deposit or upload a version of your publication to your personal webpage, or to an open institutional/non-commercial repository. This is a common alternative to ‘Gold’ Open Access Publishing when no funding is available, and the published online version of a text therefore stays behind a paywall. An embargo period is often applied, during which time your contribution cannot be shared openly, and in most cases, restrictions apply as to which version of a text you can archive. This way of sharing your research results online is commonly called ‘Green’ Open Access.

At Brepols, our self-archiving policy concerns the manuscript at different stages of writing:

  • AOM: Author Original Manuscript (or pre-print). This is the original draft of the manuscript that is submitted to a journal, edited volume, or Editorial Board before peer-review or any value has been added by the Publisher.
  • AAM: Author Accepted Manuscript (or post-print). This is the version of the manuscript version as accepted for publication after peer-review, but prior to any additional value added by the Publisher (for example, copy-editing, typesetting, etc.)
  • VoR: Version of Record. This is the final, copyedited and typeset, published version of the manuscript as it has been made available by the publisher.

We offer self-archiving policies for both journals and books.
