This series provides a forum in which to explore and discuss the rich tapestry of contacts, connections, and exchanges that existed between the Mediterranean World and Northern Europe in the Middle Ages. While often considered in isolation, these two regions, comprising the countries encircling the Mediterranean Sea on the one hand, and a region stretching from the North Atlantic, via the British Isles and France, to Scandinavia and the Baltic shores on the other, in fact saw a wealth of communications across the period, from merchants and raiders to pilgrims, scholars, and clergy. Open to both monographs and thematic edited volumes, The Mediterranean and Northern Europe in the Middle Ages invites proposals from a broad spectrum of disciplines, including but not limited to history, archaeology, literary studies, art history, and studies of medievalism and reception. Proposals that explore popular history, as well as the creative and heritage industries that speak to the contemporary world, are also encouraged.
