Since its first publication in 1936, a study of the Parzival legend as presented by the fifteenth-century German writer Ulrich Füetrer, Medium Ævum Monographs have been publishing research on a wide range of topics relating to the literatures and languages of the Middle Ages. We can accommodate monographs by single or several authors, essay-collections, and editions of texts both large and small. Our objective is to encourage the scholarly interests and skills necessary for study of the production, transmission and cultural reception of texts in their several medieval languages, to ensure they are placed clearly in the historical and linguistic contexts that gave them meaning. The size of the Monographs has ranged from around 100 published pages to over 250, depending on the needs of the topic.
The languages covered thus far comprise Latin and the various medieval forms of English (both Old and Middle), French (including the French of England), German, Gothic, Icelandic, Portuguese, Spanish, and Welsh. We are able to publish materials written in Arabic, Greek and Hebrew. Medium Ævum Monographs have featured the genres of epic, chronicle and history-writing, drama, lyric, romance, religious instruction (including prayers, sermons, and preaching aids), and travel literature, together with such specialisms as the afterlife and paradise; games and sports; giants and the monstrous; humanism; lexicography; literary theory; liturgy; love, courtoisie and knighthood; intercultural relations and conflicts; medicine; miracles and hagiography; mythography; philology and linguistics; and philosophical texts in relation to their transmission and reception. Lexicons and descriptive guides to manuscripts have also been produced.
