Stretching from the Arabian peninsula to the south-east of modern Turkey and from the River Tigris to the Mediterranean, Western Asia has always played a central role in history. Rich in archaeological and written evidence, it is an area that has been dubbed variously as one of the cradles of civilization, as home to some of the world’s oldest cultures, and as the birthplace of the three Abrahamic world religions, as well as the remarkable phenomenon of Manichaeism. Yet partly because of this perspective, exploration of the region after the conquests of Alexander the Great has in many ways remained under-researched and under-conceptualized, with little focus on the connections and mutual exchanges of its societies and religions with another or with those of central and south Asia. This series, which explicitly focuses on the period from 300 BCE-CE 750, provides a new forum for high-quality research in the archaeology and history of Western Asia. The series is open to both monographs and edited collections exploring different elements of the archaeology and history of the region from the Hellenistic period up to the end of the Umayyad Dynasty.
