Italian Instrumental Music of the Long Seicento

The essays collected in this volume, drawing on the most recent scholarship, trace the development of the Italian instrumental ensemble repertoire from the early seventeenth to the opening decades of the eighteenth century. Particular attention is devoted to the sonata tradition (from Biagio Marini to Giuseppe Avitrano, including musicians such as Dario Castello, Lelio Colista, Carlo Mannelli, Pietro Marchitelli, and Giovanni Carlo Cailò) approached from a range of distinct yet complementary perspectives. At the same time, the volume considers the emergence of an ‘orchestral’ dimension, particularly within the Bolognese milieu of the late seventeenth century, explored through instrumental music proper (in the works of Giuseppe Torelli, Domenico Gabrielli, and Giuseppe Jacchini), as well as in the context of the cantata and related vocal forms (Giacomo Antonio Perti).
