Studies in Byzantine Sigillography 15 presents new and reinterpreted material that highlights the ongoing vitality of sigillographic research.
The authors are primarily sigillographers, but also historians, archaeologists and numismatists.
Studies in Byzantine Sigillography 15 brings together a wide range of contributions that highlight the vitality and continued relevance of sigillographic research. The volume presents the systematic publication and analysis of previously unpublished seals from public and private collections, as well as material from the antiquities market, offering new evidence for the study of Byzantine administration, prosopography, and historical geography. Alongside these studies, several contributions revisit known corpora, applying new methodological approaches to refine existing interpretations and address longstanding questions. By combining new discoveries with critical re-examination, the volume demonstrates how Byzantine sigillography continues to expand the evidentiary base of Byzantine studies and to shed light on individuals, institutions, and networks otherwise absent from written sources. As such, it reaffirms the central role of seals as primary historical documents and underscores the field’s enduring contribution to the broader understanding of Byzantine society and its structures.
