Copisti a Bologna (1265-1270)

The mystery of writing is that there is nothing mysterious about it.  If Saramago is right, then it is obvious that palaeography has not yet found all the keys we need if we are to enter amongst the people who gave form to the thoughts and memories of the medieval world.  In order to reveal their identity – the greatest mystery of all – it is sometimes necessary to pass over what has already been written, affirmed and maintained, and to return to the sources instead.
The “Memoriali” conserved in the Archivio di Stato in Bologna reveal stories of men and women who created, with pen and quill veritable cathedrals of ink, indelible and sometimes of ineffable beauty.
In this volume the names are collected, the commissions listed, where possible the careers and tribulations described of more than 270 copyists documented at Bologna between 1265 and 1270. In short, it is the documentary sources, not the works produced or such as have survived, on which the present  book has been based.

«Aliud enim est picturam adorare: aliud per picturae historiam quid sit adorandum addiscere. Nam quod legentibus scriptura, hoc idiotis prestat pictura cernentibus, quia in ipsa ignorantes uident quod sequi debeant, in ipsa legunt qui litteras nesciunt. Unde et praecipue gentibus pro lectione pictura est» (Decretum, De cons., dist. III, c. 27).
I Memoriali conservati nell’Archivio di Stato di Bologna disvelano storie di uomini e di donne che hanno creato con solo penna e pennello cattedrali d’inchiostro, indelebili e talvolta di inenarrabile bellezza. In questo volume sono stati raccolti i nomi, censiti gli ingaggi, descritte, fin dove possibile, carriere e disavventure di oltre 270 copisti documentati a Bologna tra il 1265 ed il 1270. In breve, oggetto della ricerca sono state le fonti documentarie, non le opere realizzate o sopravvissute.
Queste pagine sono la versione ampliata della conferenza tenuta durante il XV^e Colloque du Comité International de Paléographie Latine (Vienna, 13-17 settembre 2005). I confini della ricerca sono stati imposti da quanto (molto poco) è stato edito sino ad oggi dai Memoriali, le finalità sono quelle di offrire il primo abbozzo di una chiave che consentirà di penetrare in un universo – quello dei manoscritti realizzati a Bologna nella seconda metà del Duecento – ancora in parte da esplorare.
