The subject of this edition is a group of about 20 glossaries containing predominantly biblical material in the form of glossae collectae, preserved in manuscripts dating from the 8th tot the 14th century, and representing all the fundamental branches of the so-called Leiden Group or Rz-Family of glossaries as far as their biblical component is concerned.
Studied in the past almost exclusively with reference to its vernacular component, the material has recently attracted much renewed attention on account of its connections with Canterbury and the school of Theodore and Hadrian. Over the centuries these glossaries have been repeatedly modified and updated and have enjoyed wide diffusion. They represent one of the standard tools for the first approach to the text of the Bible, alongside other glossographic works such as Isidore's or Eucherius's. Most of the material, however, appears in print for the first time.
The edition is organised in three sections and will occupy four volumes: Part 1 (vol. 1) will provide a detailed description of the manuscripts as well as the history of the glossarial material and the ramifications of the tradition. Part 2 (vol. 2 and 3) will present the texts: the choice of glossaries to be included in this section has been determined by the need to represent the most important branches of the tradition, by reference to which the remaining material may also be defined. Part 3 (vol. 4) will provide an Index glossarum: this index will enable the reader to see at a glance points of contact and divergence in the glosses on any specific biblical verse, and will also give account of sources and parallels.
The first two volumes to appear will be those covering the second section.
