The theme of this publication is the partnership into which the great sculptor Donatello, and the architect-sculptor Michelozzo, entered in the 1420s and 1430s in order to execute four of the most important works of sculpture of the Early Renaissance.

This is an important and widely researched study of early Renaissance sculpture and patronage. The author explores the partnership of two great sculptors - Donatello and Michelozzo - and in particular the four famous monuments they created. In the light of new primary archival sources, he discusses the aesthetic aspects of design and execution, and the social, economic and political climate of the period in which the monuments were created. It is a book both for the art-historian as well as for the student of Renaissance history in general.
