The highly anticipated "Judith" exhibition in the St. Peter's Abby in Ghent is now officially open! This exhibition accompanies the new Brepols book Judith of West Francia, Carolingian Princess and First Countess of Flanders.
Research into Judith of West Francia began in 2006 with the discovery of grave site S127 beneath St. Peter's Square during the construction of an underground car park. Initial studies failed to confirm that any of the remains belonged to Judith but fifteen years later, the "cold case" was reopened by the archaeologist of the City Of Ghent Geert Vermeiren, and the Ghent University professor and historian Steven Vanderputten. They also joined forces with Professor Isabelle De Groote and Dr Jessica Palmer, biological anthropologists from Ghent University. This resulted in a large-scale multidisciplinary scientific study, in which the archaeological and historical sources were collated and tested against the latest analytical techniques in the field of biological anthropology.
The results of this study have now been published in the new Brepols book Judith of West Francia, Carolingian Princess and First Countess of Flanders, which offers the first accessible and interdisciplinary discussion of all relevant and documented aspects of Judith’s life and legacy.
The launch of this book is accompanied by an exciting exhibition in the St. Peter's Abby in Ghent. The exhibition is open until 19 January 2025. For more information, click here.
