Submission Guidelines for The Mediaeval Journal
The General Editors are pleased to receive submissions in any of the above areas, and to respond to queries from potential contributors. Please send submissions, in the form of email attachments, to the general editors, Dr Margaret Connolly and Dr Ian Johnson at <_tmj40_st-andrews.ac.uk>.
Submissions are double-blind peer-reviewed, and for this reason should be accompanied by a separate page that includes the article’s title and the author’s name, affiliation, and contact details. The article itself should include only its title, not the name of its author, and the author should avoid self-identification in the argument or documentation of the article. Final decisions about acceptance for publication are made by the General Editors.
Preparation of Copy
Articles should be between 5,000 and 8,000 words in length, including footnotes. Contributors should submit essays electronically in MS Word format. Articles should be set in Times New Roman (12 point), and double-spaced throughout (including notes); text should be aligned to the left, not justified. Notes should be presented as endnotes, not footnotes. Captions and illustrations should be placed at the end.
TMJ uses British spelling and follows the conventions of the Modern Humanities Research Association (MHRA) Styleguide. A copy of the styleguide may be downloaded freely in PDF format from http://www.mhra.org.uk/Publications/Books/StyleGuide/download.shtml
Copies of any illustrations should accompany the initial submission. Images will normally be in black and white; exceptionally colour images may be allowed if the argument of the article requires this. For initial consideration images may be sent in the form of scanned photocopies, but once the article is accepted digital images will be required for publication (ideally in tiff format, minimum resolution 300 dpi/ppi, minimum 1MG file size; jpg format is also acceptable if in high resolution, i.e. uncompressed, 2400 dpi). On acceptance for publication images should be forwarded to the editor promptly, along with details of captions and permissions. It is the responsibility of the author to secure copyright permissions from the relevant copyright holder for any images used, and to meet any costs incurred.
Proofs will be sent to contributors in electronic form. Alterations in proof must be confined to the correction of printer’s errors; the cost of any excessive alteration will be chargeable to the contributor.
Offprints and Contributors’ Copies: Authors of articles will each receive a copy of the relevant issue.
