Throughout Christian history, there have been groups of women who lived recognizably religious lives but outside of traditional monastic structures. Despite leaving substantial, if scattered, documentary and (in some cases) visual records, they are conspicuously absent from the dominant scholarly tradition. This book series is the first ever dedicated exclusively to them. It aims to hear and interpret these women’s voices and to study their interactions with society. It spans the period from antiquity through 1800, stopping when non-cloistered female religious life became more institutionalized. This book series is also not limited to one region but focuses on Christian women from throughout the world. Its approach invites the reader to question the hegemonic norms of institutional dominance and recognizes heterogenous feminine religious expressions. It enhances the study of this important and global part of Christian history and challenges the usual boundaries of time and place that are imposed on these non-cloistered religious women. In this perspective, this series will also welcome scholars working on other (i.e. non-Christian) religious groups in order to explore collaboratively similar female religious lives in different settings
