Exhibition Illiminating the Law at the FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM, Cambridge

ILLUMINATING THE LAW
MEDIEVAL LEGAL MANUSCRIPTS IN CAMBRIDGE COLLECTIONS

An exhibition at the FITZWILLIAM MUSEUM, Cambridge.
(November-December 2001)

Drawing on the rich collections of the Fitzwilliam Museum and Cambridge Colleges, supplemented by a unique set of three manuscripts from Durham Cathedral Library, Illuminating the Law presents splendidly illuminated Italian, French and English copies of the most authoritative canon and civil law texts, rarely seen by the public.

Law in the medieval period was a vital intellectual discipline, of crucial importance for the organisation of society. For university students and practising lawyers, as well as for ecclesiastical officials and secular rulers, law books were as precious as the liturgical, devotional and literary manuscripts commissioned for discerning patrons. Moreover, law was a dynamic instrument for the government of individuals in their everyday life.

The exhibition catalogue, richly illustrated is written by a team of experts in the field, Robert Gibbs from the University of Glasgow, Susan L'Engle from the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York and Peter Clarke from Cambridge University.

2000.4.1: Brepols Publishers and Harvey Miller join forces

Turnhout, London - Harvey Miller Publishers (London) will become a part of Brepols Publishers (Turnhout).  Brepols Publishers will therefore open an editorial office in London.

Brepols Publishers is pleased to announce its new association with Harvey Miller Publishers, the London-based specialist art history publisher.

During the 25 years of its existence, Harvey Miller Publishers has established a reputation for the quality and authority of its scholarly monographs and catalogues raisonnés in the field of medieval, Renaissance and Baroque art. Major series include the Corpus Rubenianum Ludwig Burchard, the definitive Catalogue Raisonné in 27 parts of the work of the great Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens, and the Paper Museum of Cassiano dal Pozzo, a multi-volume catalogue of the 7,000 water-colours and drawings assembled in the 17th century by the Roman patron and collector Cassiano dal Pozzo, and now held for the most part in the Royal Library at Windsor Castle.

As an imprint of Brepols, Harvey Miller Publishers will remain loyal to its original aims: to publish the fruits of art historical research and connoisseurship for a world-wide audience, and to produce books whose presentation reflects the quality of their content. All publications will be in the English language, and besides the further development of the current series, an important number of new editorial perspectives will be created through a diversification in the scope of the list, chronologically and geographically. A number of exciting new projects are envisaged, including the publication of several major museum catalogues and the inception of the Corpus Vitrearum USA, a ten-part series which will catalogue, state by state, all stained glass panels dating to 1700 in American collections.

Both publishers are happy to have found a kindred spirit for their endeavours, a partner with a similar commitment to serve the academic world. Through newsletters and catalogues we will regularly update you on our activities. On this revamped website, fortnightly updated, we will include the publications of the Harvey Miller imprint from April 2000 onwards.

We would like to invite you all – authors and customers alike – to join us in this exciting new venture, and we sincerely hope that we can continue to rely on your highly valued enthusiasm, confidence and efforts in order to realise our ambitious programmes.
