The huge panoply of Latin biblical texts which were in existence and use from the second century AD/CE until the time when the Vulgate became predominant are known under the common rubric of the Vetus Latina, or the Old Latin, Bible. The term Vetus Latina refers to all those biblical texts translated into Latin which are not found in the Vulgate. The textual tradition of the Vetus Latina is complex and incomplete. Because there are a limited number of extant manuscripts that haphazardly cover the biblical text the basic sources are biblical citations or allusions that are found within the writings of the Latin Fathers or Greek patristic authors who were translated at an early date into Latin.

This database contains every citation, listed by book, chapter and verse of the Bible. The citations (over 300.000) can be searched individually or as a whole, following the biblical structure.

The application also includes online consultation of the repertorium of H.J. Frede (Kirchenschriftsteller. Verzeichnis und Sigel, Freiburg, 1995) and its updates by R. Gryson.

Vetus Latina oder "altlateinische Bibel" ist die Sammelbezeichnung für die große und sehr verschiedenartige Gruppe der lateinischen Bibeltexte, die vor und teilweise neben der Vulgata lebendig und seit dem 2. Jahrhundert in Gebrauch waren.  Vetus Latina meint alle aus dem Griechischen übersetzten Bibeltexte, die nicht zur Vulgata gehören. Die Vetus Latina ist nur sehr bruchstückhaft überliefert.  Neben wenigen erhaltenen Handschriften, die unregelmäßig über die Bibel verteilt sind, treten, als wesentliche Quelle für ihre Erforschung, die biblischen Zitate und Anspielungen bei den lateinischen und in früher Zeit ins Lateinische übersetzten Kirchenschriftstellern.

Die Datenbank enthält alle diese Zitate, die nach biblischem Buch, Kapitel und Vers geordnet sind. Sie können auf der Grundlage dieser Anordnung einzeln oder insgesamt befragt werden.

Auch das "Repertorium" von H. J. Frede (Kirchenschriftsteller. Verzeichnis und Sigel, Freiburg, 1995) und dessen Aktualisierungen (R. Gryson) können sie online befragen.

Sous le nom de Vetus Latina ou traductions «vieilles latines» de la Bible, on désigne l'ensemble des versions latines qui ont été en usage avant que l'une d'entre elles ne s'impose universellement, en évinçant les autres, ce qui lui vaudra la qualification de Vulgate. Les plus anciennes d'entre elles remontent au deuxième siècle; la Vulgate  l'emporte définitivement à l'époque carolingienne. La tradition directe de la Vetus Latina est pauvre et fragmentaire; peu de manuscrits en ont survécu, après qu'elle est sortie de l'usage. La source essentielle pour son étude est constituée par la tradition indirecte, c'est-à-dire par les nombreuses allusions et citations contenues dans les écrits des auteurs ecclésiastiques latins antérieurs au neuvième siècle.

La base de données contient toutes ces citations ordonnées par livre biblique, chapitre et verset. En fonction de cet ordre, elles peuvent être consultées de manière individuelle ou dans leur ensemble.

The pricing structure:

The price of VLD Online is a yearly subscription price for a period that runs from January 1st to December 31st. 

There are different levels of subscription :
