Summary
This volume provides a study on the 3rd millennium B.C. anthropomorphic clay figurines of the Middle Euphrates region. The research is based on over 2400 specimens, mostly in a fragmentary state, retrieved in thirteen different salvage excavations located along the Middle course of the Syrian Euphrates, from Tell Shiyukh Tahtani to the north to Tall Bi’a to the south.
The volume is subdivided in eight chapters and is aimed to give a deep insight on the anthropomorphic clay figurines of the region under examination. The new synthetic regional typology (based on the large amount of specimens) enables an understanding of figurines development and diffusion in a broader perspective. Particular attention is also paid to manufacturing aspects such as modelling, rendering and decoration. Moreover, the detailed mapping on their distribution provides new hints for the understanding of the use of these objects.
Ferhan Sakal is researcher and teaches at the Institutes for Ancient Near Eastern Studies (IANES), Department of Near Eastern Archaeology of Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. His research interests cover the archaeology and the chronology of the Middle Euphrates Region.
Dieser Band behandelt anthropomorphe Terrakotten des 3. Jahrtausends v. Chr. aus der Region Mittlerer Euphrat. Die Untersuchung beruht auf über 2400 Exemplaren, großenteils Fragmenten, die aus dreizehn verschiedenen Rettungsgrabungen entlang des Mittellaufs des syrischen Euphrat stammen, von Tell Shiyukh Tahtani im Norden bis Tall Bi’a im Süden.
Der Band ist in acht Kapitel unterteilt und gewährt einen tiefen Einblick in das Corpus der anthropomorphen Terrakotten aus dem betreffenden Gebiet. Die neue Regionaltypologie, die auf einer sehr großen Anzahl von Belegstücken aufbaut, macht es möglich, die Entwicklung der Figurinen und ihre Verbreitung aus einem größeren Blickwinkel zu verstehen. Besonders berücksichtigt wurden auch Aspekte der Herstellung, wie Entwurf, Ausführung und Dekoration. Darüber hinaus liefern die detaillierten Verbreitungskarten, neue Anhaltspunkte zum Verständnis der Verwendung der Figurinen.
