Elena Vaiani is a research fellow in the history of archaeology at the Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, with a particular interest in the relationships between collections, antiquarian studies and the visual arts in the early modern period.
Simonetta Prosperi Valenti Rodinò is Professor of History of Art at the University of Rome Tor Vergata and was formerly Curator of Italian drawings at Rome’s Istituto Nazionale per la Grafica. Her principal research interests are early modern Italian prints and drawings and the collecting practices of this period.
Helen Whitehouse was Curator of the Egyptian and Nubian collections in the Department of Antiquities of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, with a particular interest in Graeco-Roman Egypt and the post-classical reception of Egyptian antiquities.
Summary
This two-volume catalogue of more than 400 drawings includes depictions of portable Roman, Etruscan and Greek antiquities such as vases, lamps, mirrors, tripods, bells, armour, weights, measures, musical instruments, mirrors, brooches and jewellery, as well as a range of Egyptian and Egyptianising antiquities (from sarcophagi and mummy masks to cult statues and reliefs) and designs for Renaissance and seventeenth-century vases, candelabra, princely gold and silver tableware.
Amongst the antiquities are some of the earliest known records of Greek vases and countless objects of everyday life, making this a companion to Part A.V of the series (The Antichit Album), in which portable antiquities of almost every category to be found in the cabinets of Rome are also illustrated. Included in the modern designs for the decorative arts are works by sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Italian artists such as Luzio Luzzi, Giovanni Battista Montano, Giovanni Angelo Canini and Lelio Orsi. A comparatively recent addition to the known body of Paper Museum drawings is a group of 26 drawings of Egyptian antiquities, identified in a miscellaneous portfolio in the British Museum
