A hitherto unknown group of North European paintings and altarpieces from German and Netherlandish workshops - particularly the Antwerp Manneristsis - is brought together here, catalogued and illustrated.

Summary

A hitherto unknown group of North European paintings and altarpieces is brought together here, catalogued and illustrated. These richly-coloured, skilfully composed, narrative panels demonstrate the high quality of the out- put of German and Netherlandish workshops-particularly the Antwerp Mannerists. All owed much to the earlier generation of Netherlandish masters, among them Hugo van der Goes, Quentin Massys, Memling, and Rogier van der Weyden. The author includes short biographies of these well-known and of many other less well-known and of many other less well-known artists, which will be particularly welcomed by students and general readers. For further reference, Dr. Grössinger has compiled a useful handlist of Netherlandish and German Panel Paintings before 1600 in British Public Collections. 'Previously, the religious art in English churches was mentioned only in passing, if at all. Now, thanks to Dr.Grössinger, we can begin to know where to look for them.' Country Life
