Summary

The excavations in the late 1930's at Antioch, Daphne and Selucia revealed over three hundred mosaic pavements. These were published as one group in 1947 by Doro Levi under the title Antioch Mosaic Pavements, even though the geographical area extended well beyond the ancient city of Antioch. For many years that monumental work has provided the basic framework for the history and dating of mosaics in the Roman, Late Antiquity and Early Byzantine periods. However, it has long been out of print, many of the comparanda have been redated, several pavements have changed locations, and some of the pavements are incompletely published. This new, revised edition deals only with the pavements found in the city of Antioch. The material is organized according to each individual building, rather than on a proposed chronological system as in the original publication. Each pavement is considered in its entirety, including all geometrical borders, so there is less of a purely iconographical emphasis. Much of the comparative material used in past publications of the Antioch pavements has been redated in recent years, and that redating is discussed here for the Antioch pavements. Where necessary new comparanda have been selected, using only mosaics that have firm contextual dating. There is also a useful summary of the geometric motifs, prepared according to the system developed by l'Association Internationale pour l'Étude de la Mosaïque Antique for recording these motifs.
