Open Access Publishing with Brepols

Brepols wishes to ensure that authors have a full suite of publishing options for peer-reviewed research within our respected and highly-regarded periodicals and book series.
We will continue to offer a traditional subscription-based or ‘user pays’ model for our publications. In addition, we offer the following Open Access publication options:

  • Periodicals: Green and Gold Open Access
  • Books: Gold Open Access
In any model, we will always provide the same added value and professional services: peer review, copyediting, typesetting and layout, IT hosting, marketing, publication in print.

Periodicals: what publication options are available?

Brepols offers the following possibilities, depending on the specific journal:

  • Subscription model
  • Green Open Access articles within a subscription model (‘hybrid’)
  • Gold Open Access articles within a subscription model (‘hybrid’)
  • Fully Gold Open Access journals
  • Customised Open Access depending on your project needs
  • Distribution of Open Access journals with, for example a moving wall of 5 years

Subscription model: where a traditional subscription model of publication is offered:

  • A standard Protocol for Contributors should be completed and submitted to the Editorial Board for the paper to be accepted.
  • We offer some flexibility on use of the material online, where we allow posting to internal (protected) digital repositories (provided no new DOI number is given but with a correct reference and link to the publication on our website) and private circulation of articles to colleagues (in the character of a normal offprint); other arrangements for circulation can be made by agreement with the Publisher.
  • There is no cost to the author (other than any costs for providing images or other licensed material).

Green Open Access: where Green Open Access is available:

  • An embargo period will come into effect upon publication. During the embargo period, the published article will only be available through purchase (by subscription or pay-per-view), but its pre-reviewed version (that is, the version submitted initially to the Journal Editor(s), prior to any changes enacted through peer review) can be made available on an open repository, on a personal webpage, on the webpage of the Institution to which the author is affiliated, or on institutional or thematic repositories.
  • After the embargo period is passed, the post-reviewed version (that is, after peer review but prior to copyediting) may be posted onto an open repository, on a personal webpage, on the webpage of the Institution where to which the author is affiliated, or on institutional or thematic repositories.
  • The pre- and post-reviewed versions refer to the final publication (full bibliographical reference, link the publication on our website and DOI-number).
  • No new-DOI-number may be assigned.
  • The license CC BY–NC 4.0 applies. A Protocol for Contributors for Green Open Access should be completed and submitted to the Editorial Board for the paper to be accepted.
  • There is no cost to the author (other than any costs for providing images or other licensed material).
  • Green Open Access is a ‘hybrid’ model, which means it is combined with the subscription model

Gold Open Access: where Gold Open Access is offered:

  • The published article will become freely available on day one of publication on the website of the Publisher, and may be posted on open repositories, on a personal webpage, on the webpage of the Institution to which the author is affiliated, or on institutional or thematic repositories.
  • The published article contains a full bibliographical reference, the link the publication on our website and DOI-number.
  • No new-DOI-number may be assigned.
  • The license CC BY–NC 4.0 applies. A Protocol for Contributors for Gold Open Access should be completed and submitted to the Editorial Board for the paper to be accepted.
  • The author (or his/her institution) should pay an Article Processing Charge (APC), in addition to any costs for providing images or other licensed material.
  • Gold Open Access can be a ‘hybrid’ model, which means it is combined with the subscription model, when only one or several articles are Gold Open Access articles. Full Gold Open Access is a substitute for the subscription model.

Books: what publication options are available?

We are happy to offer Gold Open Access for books (edited collections, monographs, editions, etc.). For edited collections (miscellanies), the entire volume may be available by Gold Open Access, or selected articles within the collection (in which case, the sales price will be lowered proportionately). Please contact a Brepols Publishing Manager of an appropriate series for processes and fees; or, if you are unsure whom to contact, email . The published book / article(s) will become freely available on day one of publication on the website of the Publisher, and may be posted on open repositories, on a personal webpage, on the webpage of the Institution where to which the author is affiliated, or on institutional or thematic repositories.

I have an article that I would like to be published in Open Access in a Brepols periodical: what should I do?

If you have funding for a Gold Open Access article, please contact the Publishing Manager of the journal you wish to publish in. If you wish to publish a Green Open Access article, please mention this to the Editorial Board for the journal at the first opportunity, ideally upon submission of the article. As most Brepols periodicals will be ‘hybrid’, the Board will have to confirm first that there is ‘room’ in the current issue for the article in Gold or Green Open Access.
If you are ever unsure where to direct your query, please email .

Further information and comments:

For many of our periodicals we offer the possibility for a proportion of Green or Gold Open Access articles per issue. This is a ‘hybrid’ model where Open Access articles are incorporated into a subscription journal. Having a Green Open Access article means that the embargo is typically a minimum of 2 years, but is negotiable. Most of our periodicals also include the possibility for a proportion of Gold Open Access articles per issue (the ‘hybrid’ model where Open Access articles are incorporated into a subscription journal).

Finally, if you have a query about Open Access and do not know whom to contact, please send an email to , who will be able to assist you.
