The Victorine and later Abbot of Vercelli, Thomas Gallus (†1246) was renowned for his affective interpretation of the writings of Dionysius the Pseudo-Areopagite. His writings played a major part in the re-discovery of Dionysius in the thirteenth century, and in the general development of western mysticism, for example through his teaching on the “spark of synderesis”. In this volume, Gallus’s Glosses on the Celestial Hierarchy and his major commentary on the whole Dionysian corpus, the Explanatio, are edited in their entirety for the first time.

Declan Lawell currently teaches in The Blue Coat School, Liverpool.

Review
"Lawell's texts are well produced, carefully copy-edited and simply presented. They will provide Gallus scholars with an invaluable set of tools." (Timothy Budde, in: The Journal of Medieval Latin, 23, 2013, p. 360-366)
