This Handlist records the known works of more than two thousand Latin writers from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales from the fifth century to the sixteenth.

This Handlist records the known works of more than two thousand Latin writers from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales from the fifth century to the sixteenth. British and Irish writers who spent their careers on the continent of Europe, continental writers whose careers brought them to Britain or Ireland, and writers who worked under Anglo-Norman rulers in France all find their place. The emphasis is bibliographical rather than biographical, and the aim is to enable the reader easily to discover what an author wrote and where copies may be found. The best or most accessible editions are cited for printed texts, lists of manuscripts are provided for unprinted works or for those works where the available editions do not provide this information. The number of Latin works identified exceeds 5200.
Richard Sharpe is the Professor in Diplomatic in the University of Oxford and a fellow of Wadham College. He is general editor of the Corpus of British Medieval Library Catalogues.
Review

“Sharpe is to be congratulated on putting an immense amount of information and learning at our disposal in a book that is clearly thought out, and layed out.” (C. Stancliffe, in Journal of Theological Studies, 50, 1999)

“Sharpe’s Latin Writers will revolutionize the procedures to be adopted for finding out about Latin texts written in the British Isles, or by writers from the British Isles, in the period up to about 1540.” (N.F. Palmer, in Medium Aevum, 68, 1999, p. 111)

“Richard Sharpe has provided medievalists with an invaluable tool for their studies.” (A. Gransden, in English Historical Review 114, 1999, p. 665)

"Both author and publisherss can be justly pleased with this volume, which kicks off the Subsidia series of the Journal of Medieval Latin in fine style." (D. Ó Cróinin, in: The Medieval Review, 98.01.07)
