Richard de Saint-Victor († 1173), d’origine écossaise, fut à la fois un théologien, un exégète et surtout un maître spirituel. Quelque peu éclipsé par la gloire de Hugues qui le précéda à l’abbaye de Saint-Victor, il fut surtout connu par son De Trinitate, alors et depuis influent, et par Les douze patriarches (ou Beniamin minor), un premier essai d’analyse des voies de la contemplation.
