ABOUT

This series presents the results of research undertaken by various national teams. The volumes demonstrate how the literature of the Ancient, Patristic and medieval periods became available to the humanists. They provide a systematic inventory of editions, translations and commentaries of texts 'rediscovered' by humanist scholars of the Renaissance. The subseries ‘Bohemia and Moravia’ presents the humanist book culture in both mainly Czech speaking Bohemian crown lands. The first volume deals with the rise of book printing in the specific religious and political situation of the kingdom in the late 15th century and evaluates the impact of antiquity on books printed in this area until 1547. The second volume concentrates on the treatment of classical texts for educational purposes in Bohemia in approximately the 1550s–1620s. The third volume traces transmission of the biblical text in the 16th century by a number of Czech translators employing humanistic methods. The volumes contain bibliographical sketches of Czech printers and humanist scholars and their more significant paratexts such as introductory poems or forewords.
